Northside Budokai is a not-for-profit associate club of Bayside Budokai, and an affiliate dojo of Aikido Shoryukai Australia and Queensland Kendo Renmei, established to promote the art and discipline of jodo, iaido, and aikido. We hope you enjoy our site and take a moment to drop us a line here.
David Kolb sensei is a highly experienced and qualified practitioner of jodo, iaido, and aikido and is highly regarded amongst his peers and students. He teaches on Fridays and also runs weekly classes in Wynnum at his Bayside Budokai dojo. We, the Northside crew also run iaido and open practice on Tuesdays.
Great expansive and elevated space on timber floor. The venue, which we share with the tai-chi group and other tenants, is kindly provided by the Anglican Church Parish Council. It is right next to the heritage-listed Church of the Holy Spirit.
Our aims are to develop good character, to maintain a calm state of mind in all situations and to cope with adversities in whatever form.
Monthly and Concession training rates are available for members only. A separate annual QKR Membership application is also required for insurance purposes and access to participate in gradings and seminars. Membership applications, Direct Bank Deposit and PayID details available on request.

Yes. However, you are most welcome to first observe a training session to see if you like it.
To get started, any comfortable sportswear will do. We have spare training sticks and wooden swords available to use until you have purchased your own. Your instructor will advise when it is appropriate for you to get the training weapons and uniforms.
Yes. 27 mins by (Chermside) Bus 320 from the city to Wavell Heights (Shaw Rd near Vale St) stop 39, then 5 mins walk to church hall (350m). 15 mins by train from Central to Nundah station, then 18 mins walk to church hall (1.3km).
Basically, we practice the techniques and forms as standardised by the All Japan Kendo Federation. For the more advanced levels, we study the traditional schools of Shindo Muso Ryu (jodo) and Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu (iaido).
Aikido, due to its non-competitive nature, is a lot harder to strictly define, however it has a close affinity to other arts in principle. Gradings are standardised and set by the Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Japan.
Please check out David Kolb sensei's Bayside Budokai website for a more comprehensive information and navigate to the Jodo, Iaido, and Aikido pages to get your answers.
All our classes are open to anyone, so we don't run a dedicated kids class. However, we highly encourage any interests and welcome everyone to check us out first during training and will talk to you directly to see if our practice would suit them.
Yes, gradings are part of the training however they are voluntary. Teachers will advise and recommend a student when the necessary requirements are met. All gradings are officially recognised by the HQs in Japan (ZNKR, and Aikikai Hombu), and are conducted locally, state-wide, or in national seminars.
